After three days of little to no wind and fog, today started out little better than yesterday. Fog an wind around 12-15 in the morning and early afternoon. After a couple of hours of foggy and wet riding the fog finally cleared and the wind came up to around 15-18. We still had plenty of beach to ride even though the tide was starting to come in. The icing on the cake was that after several hours of epic winds and riding, the wind started to die right as we all we packing up. A great end to an epic day. Sorry no pics.

Labor Day was rather foggy on the beach. Wind was 8-12. Not much traffic so you really just had to avoid other kites and buggies. Not too many pics since I buggies most of the time.

Sunday seems promising until the fog rolled in. Winds were quite light and most of the day was spent meeting newcomers and hanging out. Sunday night was dinner at Jon’s. Quite a good turnout.

Today was an interesting day at Sunset beach. High temps, East wind and quite a few in attendance. Many braved the gusty east winds, others, mostly locals spent the day observing. Beach is much better than I last reported last. The entrance is a lot better but still challenging. The beach has smoothed out over the last week due to high surf. Lot of hard pack now.

“WOW, what a difference this past week has made. Some nice high tides and some turbulent seas has smoothed out the beach nicely.” – Sunset Beach Mayor Jimmy Vaughn

Jellis called in with a Mouth of the Columbia – South Jetty beach report.
The beach is filling in nicely since the rebuilding of the South Jetty. This is welcome news since the beach has been slowly disappearing for quite some time now. The wind was just howling across the Columbia River Bar with whitecaps all the way across. Even at high tide Jon says it is still ride-able. A bit cluttered but still good for some well deserved speed runs. 4×4 required or drag your gear from parking lot “C.”

A day with no clouds in the sky and upper 70′s temperatures provided those in attendance with a perfect day for our favorite sport. Although the beach is not the best it is still ridable. be warned the entrance is a little tricky and there are large soft patches. The chances of getting stuck are quite high so plan your approach and watch out for soft spots. A rare but welcome treat was visible today. I have only seen this once or twice before in all the years that I have been going to Sunset. I was able to get a picture of the Fata Morgana, but alas it was barely worth it. An aside – phone cameras just cant compare to a good DSLR.
“In calm weather, a layer of significantly warmer air can rest over colder dense air, forming an atmospheric duct which acts like a refracting lens, producing a series of both inverted and erect images. A Fata Morgana requires a duct to be present; thermal inversion alone is not enough to produce this kind of mirage. While a thermal inversion often takes place without there being an atmospheric duct, an atmospheric duct cannot exist without there first being a thermal inversion.” from THIS WIKI PAGE

The two circled areas are the Tillamook Head Lighthouse is on the right and a large rock formation is on the left. Their reflections are quite visible with the naked eye.
Chris, Maddog, Lynn, Mike and Ann Jimmy and Jellis were all on the beach today.
Sorry no pictures of Chris since he never stopped buggying. So here’s one from way back in May.
